Q.1.What are the opening hours for the Reference Desk ?
Opening hours are from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Monday to Thursday; 8:30 am to 3:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday.
Q.2.Is the Search Room closed to researchers during the lunch hour (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm) ?
The Search Room is NOT opened to the public during lunch hour, however if the researcher is consulting a document before the staff breaks for lunch they are allowed to continue using said document. No new document can be requested during that period.
Q.3.Am I allowed to photograph a document?
Researchers are allowed to photograph a document once permission is granted.
Q.4.Are cell phones permitted?
All cell phones must be either switched off or put in the silent/vibrate mode. All cell phone calls must be answered out of the Search Room so that other researchers are not disturbed.
Q.5.Are you allowed to have a snack or a drink while viewing the documents?
No eating is allowed in search room.
Q.6.Is there any particular protocol I must follow on entering the Search Room?

Q.7.Can I borrow books or documents from the Archives?
The National Archives DOES NOT loan books or documents beyond the search room. No documents are permitted to be taken out of the institution.
Q.8.Can I be denied access to a document?
Yes. A researcher can be denied access to a document if it is in poor condition or if there are access restrictions set by the donor.
Q.9.Am I allowed to use my laptop in the Search Room to record my information?
Yes. you can use a laptop in the Search Room.
Q.10.Can I mark or make a note on a document with a pencil for ease of reference?
No. Researchers must never mark or note anything on the documents at the National Archives of Guyana.
Q.11.How many documents am I allowed at any one time?
Researchers are allowed a maximum of three (3) documents at one time.
Q.12.Can I request that a document be taken out for me via the phone before my arrival at the Archives?
Yes. You can also inquire if a particular document is contained in our holdings.
